Im Nachgang an das interdisziplinäre Workshop-Seminar POLITISCHE BILDER LESEN an der Goethe Universität Frankfurt entsteht ein Essayband, in dem methodische Bildanalyse-Werkzeuge aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen vorgestellt und vor allem neu kreiert werden. Spätestens seit den 1990er Jahren ist die Disziplin Bildwissenschaft geprägt von interdisziplinärer Forschung. Der Bildtypus der Politischen Bilder steht dabei als Analysegegenstand an der Schnittstelle von Visueller Kultur, Kunstgeschichte, Soziologie und Politikwissenschaft. Aus diesen und ähnlichen Bereichen möchten wir Forschende einladen, ein Dekodierungs-Tool in Essayform bei uns einzureichen. In jedem Essay geht es darum, an einem ausgewählten Bild(typus) die eigens geschaffene Methode (z.B. aus der Kombination mehrerer bereits bestehender Methoden) anzuwenden — und das politische Moment zu dekodieren. Die Entwicklung eines Werkzeugs und die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sollen dabei so dargestellt werden, dass sie als Blaupause für die Analyse anderer Bilder dienen können.
Die vorgestellte Methode wird an einem politischen Bild exemplifiziert, wobei die wissenschaftliche Relevanz und gesellschaftspolitische Aktualität des Gegenstands der Auseinandersetzung deutlich werden soll. Kern der Publikation ist somit eine fundierte interdisziplinäre Auseinandersetzung mit der Deutung von politischen Bildern, welche sowohl bildwissenschaftliche als auch soziologische oder politikwissenschaftliche Sichtweisen kritisch befragt. Von besonderem Interesse ist dabei die Spezifikation des Zusammenhangs von Bild- und Machtstrukturen. Mit der Veröffentlichung des zusammengetragenen „Werkzeugkastens“ soll der inter- und transdisziplinäre Dialog zwischen Visueller Kultur und Soziologie eine methodische Basis für weitere Projekte legen. Es geht darum, die aus unterschiedlichen Forschungsschwerpunkten informierten Perspektiven der Beitragenden fruchtbarwerden zu lassen und in der gemeinsamen transdisziplinären Arbeit ein Instrumentariumzusammenzustellen, um visuelle politische Kommunikation oder politische Bilder systematisch analysieren zu können. Die angewandte Lesart soll durch graphische Aufbereitung des/der Bildes/r verdeutlicht werden, z.B. durch eingezeichnete Segmente, Blickachsen, Kompositionslinien, Schwärzungen, Hervorhebung wichtiger Details.

The International Conference invites presentations from sociologists and social scientists from around the world on research and think pieces that would generate discussion, debate, and dialogue on vulnerabilities and resistance.
This year’s theme captures the specificity of present conditions in different contexts and various domains. Lives and livelihoods as well as spaces and communities are drastically changed by health crises, ecological disasters, polarization, and political repression. Social institutions are constantly adapting to these challenges. Social relationships are being restructured and new ways of responding to the needs of the time are emerging. Novel and deviant forms of agency, social networking, and collective action that display adaptation, resilience, or resistance have emerged. How can sociological imagination make sense of all these? How might sociologists shape the ongoing conversations about a rapidly changing social context?
As the Philippines and governments around the world continue to grapple with the risks brought by the coronavirus pandemic, which continue to intensify and pronounce already-existing inequalities and vulnerabilities, individuals and social institutions are constantly adapting to its challenges. Social relationships are being restructured and new ways of responding to the needs of the time are emerging. It is then useful to examine the brand of leadership and governance that is needed to navigate us through these challenges. How might sociologists participate in this nationwide deliberation?
This conference seeks to bring in a range of diverse voices that can problematize, theorize, and empirically analyze the various experiences of vulnerability, precarity and resistance. This conference invites papers in various fields of sociological study that explains these forces as they affect individual actors, social networks, and governance.
