This book presents essays that address fundamental issues in social and cultural theory by viewing them through the lens of aesthetic theory. Drawing on the aesthetic theories of Theodor W. Adorno, Gregory Bateson, Jean-Marie Guyau, Talcott Parsons and Georg Simmel, it suggests a new take on basic sociological concepts and methodologies. The chapters cover a wide range of topics, including the sensuality of social action, social construction of unreality, and The Rolling Stones’ enduring success as a reflection of our society and culture.
The book’s title Sociology in a New Key refers to a classic work by Susanne K. Langer, whose Philosophy in a New Key argued for a reorientation of modern philosophical thought based on a thorough account of symbolism in general and of the arts in particular. In this way, the basic ideas and assumptions of the philosophical tradition are transposed to new understandings and perspectives. After all, it was Georg Simmel himself who claimed to have gained several of his general theoretical insights “via the detour of reflections on the essence of art.” The book will appeal to scholars and students of the sociology of the arts and music, and to anyone interested in the intersection of social theory and aesthetics.

Georg Simmel’s political thought: Socialism and Nietzschean aristocratism in Journal of Classical Sociology

Georg Simmel’s political position has rarely been discussed explicitly – perhaps because many scholars have assumed that Simmel was ‘apolitical’ before 1914. The present article shows that even before 1914 Simmel held a distinct political position, to wit a peculiar kind of liberal-Nietzschean aristocratic individualism. This individualism is the result of a passage through ‘the hard school’ of egalitarian socialism in order to reach true individuality. It is closely related to Simmel’s central theorem of the so-called ‘individual law’. After a socio-historical contextualisation of Simmel’s political thought, the article follows this motif in detail through his diagnosis of the times, his theory of socio-cultural development, his engagement in cultural politics, his ideal of personality formation and his engagement in the bourgeois women’s movement. Simmel’s thought culminates in a conception of ‘dialectic aristocratism’. In this respect, the normative core of Simmel’s political standpoint is very close to Max Weber’s position. The last section argues that Simmel’s war writings do not mark a break in his political thinking, but rather apply the same theorem of the ‘individual law’ to the German state. Through its various stages, the article shows that Simmel’s political orientation, linked to key theoretical concepts, is deeply rooted in the educated bourgeoisie’s worldview and habitus.

Die Zwischenkriegszeit, also die Zeit von 1918 bis 1939, ist im deutschsprachigen Raum für die Soziologie, wie für die Sozialwissenschaften allgemein, sowohl auf institutioneller Ebene als auch mit Blick auf die Ideen- und Metho- dengeschichte von besonderer Bedeutung. Die Geschichte der Soziologie der Zwischenkriegszeit ist deswegen von besonderem Interesse, weil sich als eine Folge des Ersten Weltkriegs die schon zuvor wahrgenommene „Krise der Geisteswissenschaften“ verschärfte und sich auch – aufgrund der neuen wirtschaftlichen, politischen, gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Verhältnisse – die Soziologie nach 1918 stark veränderte. Mit großen Erwartungen und Hoffnungen blickte man auf die Soziologie, man erhoffte sich „Orientierungswissen“ und Lösungswege aus der Krise. Das Buch zur Soziologie der Zwischenkriegszeit im deutschsprachigen Raum ist der erste Band einer mehrbändigen Reihe unter dem Titel Soziologie der Zwischenkriegszeit. History of Sociology in Germany. A History

This open access book traces the development of sociology in Germany from the late 19th century to the present day, providing a concise overview of the main actors, institutional processes, theories, methods, topics and controversies. Throughout the book, the author relates the discipline’s history to its historical, economic, political and cultural contexts. The book begins with sociology in the German Reich, the Weimar Republic, National Socialism and exile, before exploring sociology after 1945 as a ‘key discipline’ of the young Federal Republic of Germany, and reconstructing the periods from 1945 to 1968 and from 1968 to 1990. The final chapters are devoted to sociology in the German Democratic Republic and the period from 1990 to the present day. This work will appeal to students and scholars of sociology, and to a general readership interested in the history of Germany.
